Growing food and community from the heart of Philadelphia
Our History...
Founded in 1983, Glenwood Green Acres is a historic community garden located in North Philadelphia. This site once held a whisky barrel factory, however a fire destroyed the building the property to sit vacant and become a site for illegal dumping. Noticing the impact that this vacant plot of land had on the wellbeing of their community, local residents came together to revitalize this area into a space that all community members could use, which is how Glenwood Green Acres came to be.
This initiative was led by community leaders, Mr. & Mrs. James, along with other neighbors. For the first 14 year, Glenwood Green Acres gardeners were faced with the constant threat of displacement as the 4 acre plot of land continued to gain the interest of developers. It would not be until 1997 that this threat would be relieved, as the garden joined the Neighborhood Garden Trust-- which helped preserve the ownership of the land as a community garden for decades to come!
Today, our garden has over 90 plots of in-ground garden beds, a tool library, and lively garden community. Gardeners come from all cultural backgrounds, making Glenwood the perfect garden for learning, conversation, and of course, growing. So with this being said we welcome all who look to grow with us! If you or anyone you know may be interested, please feel free to reach out, and if availability permits, join us as we grow together❀
